Have you been curious about 3D printing and are trying to figure out if you might enjoy it, without the big commitment to a printer?
Guess what! You can start exploring this fun hobby without buying a 3D printer right away.
Step 1: Get inspired and find Something to Print
Start simple! Look for an easy and practical design. Maybe a cool keychain, a toy, or a fun bookmark. You can find tons of free 3D models online. Here are some of our favorite websites and models.
When selecting a file, look at the comments and the number of downloads. Go for well proven models at the start, just until you develop an intuition for quality. Read the details about the settings recommended to print, that will help you with file preparation. More information on file selection here.
Step 2: Find a Printer
LIBRARY: Many public libraries have 3D printers you can use for free. Here’s what to do:
- Check if your local library has a 3D printer.
- Read the rules – Some libraries want you to bring an already pre-sliced file, while others help you prepare it.
- Pick a small design – Aim for something that prints in under 2 hours so you can watch it happen!
If you’re not ready prepare the file yourself, the library staff can often help. (Ask in advance to avoid disappointment). Here is some info on how to prepare/slice the STL file
Step 3: Want to Print from Home? Try a Printing Service!
If your library doesn’t have a printer, you can order a print online. Websites like Craftcloud let you upload your design, get a price, and have it printed and shipped to you!
