When selecting a first STL file to prepare and print, go for something small and simple. That will give you the room to understand the process and iron out the challenges quickly.
There are at least 20 websites to find STL files and the All3DP all about 3D printing website does a great job comparing them, so we are not going to repeat their work here.
As a start though, here are a few websites and models that our family likes. Utilize a search bar on these websites, our favorite search words include: Flexi, articulated, practical, toy, fidget, print in place.
When you find a file you like, check out that creator’s entire profile, most likely they will have more files that you will enjoy and follow them to support their work.
Another creative way to find amazing models is to look at Contests section on these websites and find winners from previous contests. There are some hidden gems in there.
Before downloading the file, review comments section and pick a file that has been printed by other people. Pay attention to the “file details” section, usually the creators specify the preferred setting. Such as need for supports, recommended infill %, layer height, etc.
Download an STL file format.
Next you need to Slice the File to prepare it for the printer, jump to the next step.
